No matter in which place the salt is always salty,
No matter in which place the vinegar is always sour.
A Chinese proverb
Surname OUYANG (歐陽)
Ou means: a Chinese surname.
Yang means: the sun; bright; clear.
The surname Ouyang is about 2,300 years old.
The three surnames of Ou (歐), Ouyang (歐陽) and Ouhou (歐侯) originated
from the same ancestor. However, it seems that surname Ouhou has disappeared.
The surname Ouyang originated in an area referred to during the Han Dynasty
(漢朝 206BC to 220AD) as the Bohai prefecture (渤海郡). The present day
location of Bohai prefecture is in Cang county (滄縣 116.9 degree East and
38.3 degree North on the world map) in Hebei province (河北省).
There was a big pavilion built on a mountain called Ouyu (歐餘). It was
facing south and so it received sunlight throughout the year. People living
around the area near the mountain called it Ouyangting (歐陽亭) or Ou the
sunshine pavilion (in present day Wujin county 吳進 縣 in Jiangsu province
江蘇省). It was situated within the dominion of the State of Yue (越國 present
day Zhuji county 諸暨縣 in Zhejiang Province 浙江省).
The States of Yue (越國) and Chu (楚國 present day Jiangling county 江陵
縣 in Hubei province 湖北省) were neighbouring and rival States. During
the Warring States Period (戰國時代), in 334BC, Chu and Yue were at war.
The State of Yue was defeated and annexed by Chu.
Si Ti (姒蹄) the second son of the last ruler of Yue, Si Wujiang (姒無疆
) was given the authority by Xiong Shang (熊商), the 35th ruler of Chu,
to administer the district of Ouyangting. He was also being given the title
Ouyangting Hou (歐陽亭侯) or the Marquis of Ouyangting. The title was inheritable
by his descendants after his death.
By the end of the Warring States Period (戰國時代 453BC to 221BC) there
were only seven States left in the land. The State of Qin (秦國 present
day Fengxiang county 鳳翔縣 in Shaanxi province 陜西省) was the strongest.
Eventually, Ying Zheng (嬴政), the 37th ruler of Qin conquered all the other
States in the land.
In 223BC, the State of Chu was subjugated by the Qin. The title Ouyangting
Hou was abolished. Si Ti, the first Ouyangting Hou had many descendants.
Some of them adopted OU (歐), some adopted OUYANG (歐陽) and some adopted
OUHOU (歐侯) as their surnames and left off the word Ting (pavilion). The
members of the Ou branch relocated themselves to the north.
The couplet of surname Ouyang:
望出渤海,---Wang4 chu Bohai,
姓啟歐餘.---Xing4 qi2 Ouyu.
The prominent produced by the OUYANG clan were:
(1) 歐陽修 Ouyang Xiu (1007AD to 1072AD)
Ouyang Xiu was born in Jiezhou Luling (吉州廬陵) In present day Jiangxi
province (江西省) in 1007AD during the 4th year reign of Emperor Zhen Zong
Zhao Heng (真帝趙恆 998AD to 1022AD). His father passed away when he was
only 4 years old. His mother Zheng Shi (鄭氏) wanted him to study and became
an official, but her family was so poor that she could not afford to buy
rush and paper to teach her son. She used a reed as brush to teach her
son to write on the sand. That was the way that Zheng Shi taught her son
how to read write and to study the Classics. In 1036, Ouyang Xiu sat for
the Imperial Examinations and passed with distinction (甲科 1st Class Honour)
. He was 24 years -old. The following year the Emperor appointed him as
an high official. He had served in various parts in the country. He was
promoted as the 翰林學士 (a member of the Imperial Academy). Eventually
he became the tutor of the Crown Prince. As he was growing old he retired
and lived in seclusion in Ying Zhou (潁州) until he passed away in 1072AD.
He was a statesman and a man of letter. He had written many books.
