Surname - SHEN (沈)
Shen means: to investigate; to analysis carefully.
The surname Shen is about 2,500 years old.
The surname Shen originated in an area referred to during the Han Dynasty
(漢朝 206BC to 220AD) as the Wuxing prefecture (吳興郡). The present day
location of Wuxing prefecture is the Wuxing county (吳興縣 120.1 degree
East and 30.9 degree North on the world map) of Zhejiang province (浙江省
).
Zhou King Cheng (周成王 1115BC to 1079BC) was the second King of the Zhou
Dynasty (周朝 1134BC to 256BC). Zhou King Cheng not only bestowed upon his
uncle, Ji Jidai (姬季戴), the inheritable title of Zi (子 or Visco) but
also delegated him the authority to rule a district called Shen (沈 present
day Shenqiuji 沈丘集 town in Fuyang county 阜陽縣 in Anhui province 安徽
省). Ji Jidai renamed his new domain as the State of Shen (沈國).
In 506BC, Zhou King Jing (周敬王 519BC to 475BC), the 26th King of the Zhou
Dynasty, was the central authority in the land. He ordered eighteen of his
vassal States to send troops to attack the State of Chu (楚國 present day
Jiangling county 江陵縣 in Hubei province 湖北省) for being insubordinate.
A punitive force consisting the troops from seventeen vassal States was
formed. The ruler of Chu was Xiong Zhen (熊軫), the 28th ruler who ruled
Chu from 515BC to 489BC.
Jia (嘉), the ruler of Shen refused to send in troops because he did not
want to infuriate the ruler of Chu. The invasion force was defeated by Chu.
Cai Shen (蔡申), the ruler of the State of Cai ( 蔡國 present day Shangcai
county 上蔡縣 in Henan province 河南省) blamed the failure on the State
of Shen for not sending troops to help.
While the troops of the State of Cai were on their way home passing through
Shen, Cai Shen, took the opportunity and had the State of Shen subjugated.
Jia, the ruler of Shen, was captured and was later executed. That was the
end of the State of Shen. The children of Jia fled to Chu and they adopted

(This tone has evolved into the third tone in modern standard Chinese pronunciation)
(C) Ancient 3rd tone = Qu Sheng (去聲) = falling tone
(This tone has evolved into the fourth tone in modern standard Chinese pronunciation)
.
(D) Ancient 4th tone = Ru Sheng (入聲) = entering tone
(This ancient fourth tone in classical Chinese pronunciation, which is still
retained in certain dialects, is now called Neutral Tone> 輕聲<).

"There lived a scholar by the name of Lu Sheng (盧生) who was poor and unemployed.

Once he stayed at an inn in the city of Handan (邯鄲 present day Handan

Lu Sheng a ceramic pillow to rest his head when he went to bed that night.
It was still daylight and in the inn's kitchen the innkeeper was cooking
yellow millet. Curious about what it could do, Lu Sheng laid in bed with
his head on the ceramic pillow. Before long he fell asleep.
Lu Sheng then had the sweetest dream. He arrived in an unrecognized country

led a comfortable life. He was later blessed with five sons who were extraordinarily
gifted. Eventually he was appointed the Prime Minister. He lived till the

prosperity and longevity. He was survived by many descendants.
Lu Sheng woke up and he saw the monk was standing next to his bed. He became
aware that the innkeeper was still cooking the yellow millet as dusk approached.
He realized that he had just had a dream. He had been a prosperous man
for fifty years with many offspring. Now he was back to being a dejected
scholar. He concluded that rich or poor after all was just like a short
