Applying the Tao seems so difficult in practice. Spiritual wisdom is like that!
Maybe a couple of examples or more may help.
A couple of Confucius's disciple had an argument. A said that 2+2=4; if it were not so, he would retire out into the woods. B said that 2+2=6; if it were not so he would kill himself. They went before Confucius to decide. Confucius said that, yes, 2+2=6. A left and meditated and came back 30 years later and asked Confucius - Master why is 2+2=6? Confucius said simply - To save a life, 2+2=6; B might not be wiser, but who am I to take a foolish man's life?
Lao Tze when asked what 1+1 equals; replied - '3'. Why? Ponder this, he said; in the spirit the total must be greater than the sum of the parts! Otherwise you will still be in this world of humans! That is the basis of 'life'! Take your parents for example!
A Buddhist disciple got angry with his Zen master - I have been here for 40 years and yet I have learnt nothing! Why blame me? the Master replied. I gave you food and lodging, talked to you, involved you in all my daily life. What is there to learn but life's experience itself. Were you blind to your own life's experience? Who can teach you spiritual wisdom but your own experience? Have you been sad? Have you been happy?
