李白之詩 A poem by Li Bai (701AD to 762AD)

送友人入蜀 (*1A)
Sending off a friend to Shu

見說蠶叢路,---jian4 shuo Can2 Cong2 lu4 [*2B],
崎嶇不易行.---Qi2 qu [*3C] bu4 yi4 xing2.
山從人面起,---Shan cong2 ren2 mian4 qi3,
雲傍馬頭生.---Yun2 bang4 ma3 tou2 sheng.

芳樹籠秦棧,---Fang shu4 long3 Qin Zhan4 [*4D]
春流遶蜀城.---Chun liu2 rao4 Shu Cheng2 [*5E].
升沈應已定,---Sheng shen ying yi3 ding4,
不必問君平.---Bu4 bi4 wen4 Jun Ping.

The explanations in plain Chinese and English.

(1) 我聽得人家傳說, 四川的地方, 每多極狹小的道路,
I heard people say that the roads in Shu were narrow and small,
(2) 尤其是高高低低, 很不容易行走的.
They were so rugged and rough that journeying to Shu was not easy.
(3) 那裏的山, 好像從人面前突然聳起;
There, the mountains were as if appearing right in front of you,
(4) 山上的浮雲, 又好似傍著馬頭上發生出來.
And the floating clouds appeared coming from the side of the horses' heads.

(5) 還有那茂盛的花樹, 籠罩著陝西的棧道,
There were also the luxuriant trees and flowers shrouded the plank roads
that built along the faces of the cliffs in Shaanxi province
(6) 春天時候的流水, 曲遶著四川城牆.
During the springtime the water flew round the wall cities in Shu,
(7) 要知我人的命運窮迫, 本有定數,
As my fate was pre-ordained
(8) 何必前去問卜, 找尋那嚴君平一班的人物呢!
It was not necessary to consult those people like Yan Junping, the famous
fortune teller in Chengdu.

Notes:

[1A] 蜀 (Shu)
is the present day province of Sichuan (四川省)

[2B] 蠶叢路 (can2 cong2 lu4)
means narrow and small roads (是極狹小的路).

[3C] 崎嶇(qi2 qu)
means rugged and rough (是山路高低不平).

[4D] 秦棧 (Qin zhan4)
The plank roads built along the faces of cliffs in Shaanxi province (陝西
省),
是陝西省的棧道.

[5E] 蜀城 (Shu cheng2)
The walled cities in Sichuan province (就是四川的城).

[6F] 君平 (Jun Ping)
was a respectful name given to a very famous fortune teller in Chengdu city
in Sichuan province. His real name was Yan Zun (嚴遵) who lived during the
Western Han Dynasty 202BC to 8AD. (嚴遵字君平, 西漢時侯人, 是在四川成都賣
卜的名家.

The back ground of the poem

蠶叢﹐帝嚳之後﹐始封于蜀者也。秦棧﹐即漢中府﹐入蜀之棧道也。
君平﹐蜀人﹐嚴遵﹐漢成都賣卜者也。太白送友入蜀﹐詩意曰﹐
西蜀古蠶叢之國﹐崎嶇險阻﹐人不易行也﹐路窄而徑曲﹐山當人面﹐
壁陟而立﹐山氣障而多雲﹐如煙如霧﹐從入馬首而忽滅﹐棧道羊腸九折﹐
而樹木參差籠映﹐中有深泉﹐從高而下﹐南流入蜀﹐而遶其城郭﹐
吾聞成都昔有賢者嚴君平賣卜﹐今或亦有高人隱此﹐然子之遷于蜀也﹐
升沉是皆有命存焉﹐雖有善卜﹐亦不必問也。
