唐朝詩 Poems from Tang Dynasty 618AD to 907AD) (01)

張說之詩 A poem by Zhang Shuo (667AD to 730AD)

蜀(*1A) 道後期 (*2B)
The delay in Shu

客人爭日月,---Ke4 ren2 zheng ri4 yue4,
來往預期程.---Lai2 wang3 yu4 qi cheng2(*3C).

秋風不相待,---Qiu feng bu4 xiang dai4,
先至洛陽城.---Xian zhi4 Luoyang cheng2.

The explanations in plain Chinese and English

(1) 出門作客的人, 入心總希望早些回去,
The wish of a traveler is to return home early, which is like competing
with time.
(2) 好似和歲月在競爭一樣. 我原已預定回去的日期(當在秋天之前) 路程, 誰知又
延誤了.
I planned to return home before autumn, but I missed the opportunity because
of a delay.

(3) 秋風竟不肯等待我,
The autumn wind won't wait for me,
(4) 已先我而吹到故鄉洛陽去了.
And it has blown into my native place, Luoyang, before me.

Notes:

(*1A) Shu (蜀)
is the single name of the preset day province of Sichuan (四川省) where
the author was serving as an official when he wrote this poem.

(*2B) 後期
延誤歸期。

(*3C) 預期程
預想回去之日期路程。

The back ground of the poem

這是一首藉秋風先至故鄉﹐反襯自己久滯不歸﹐鄉愁盈懷的詩。
張說是洛陽人﹐寫這首詩﹐大約是武后年間出使四川的時候。
