唐朝詩 Poems from Tang Dynasty (618AD to 907AD) (01)

王維之詩 A poem by Wang Wei (701AD to 761AD)

[This poem was written in a hotel near a bamboo grove at Wangchuan (輞川
) in Lantian county (藍田縣) of Shaanxi province (陝西省)].

竹裏館(*1A) In a bamboo hotel

獨坐幽篁裏,---Du2 zuo4 you huang2(*2B) li3,
彈琴復長嘯;---Tan2 qin2 fu4 chang2 xiao4(*3C);
深林人不知,---Shen lin2 ren2 bu4 zhi,
明月來相照.---Ming2 yue4 lai2 xiang zhao4

(1) 我孤獨地坐在那幽靜的竹林裏面,
Alone, I am sitting in a quiet and secluded bamboo groove,
(2) 彈了一會琴, 有發出長音嘯了幾聲;
While playing the zither for a little I hear a few whistles;
(3) 但是那深密的竹林裏, 人們都不能知道,
But there is no one in the deep bamboo grove,
(4) 祇有明亮的月光, 多蒙他前來照著我.
Only the bright moon is shining on me.

Notes:
(*1A) 竹里館 = 王維輞川別的一種建築。

(*2B) 幽篁 (you huang2) = means clear and quiet bamboo grove (清靜的竹林
).

(*3C) 嘯 (xiao4) = means whistle.

The back ground of the poem

此言獨居之了也﹐維在輞川幽竹之下﹐揮琴一曲﹐
長嘯數聲﹐深林之中﹐人不知之﹐但有明月相照而已。
