唐朝詩 Poems from Tang Dynasty (618AD to 907AD (01)

杜甫之詩 A Tpoem by Du Fu (712AD to 770AD)

月下憶舍弟
Thinking of my younger brothers in a moonlit night

戍鼓斷人行,---Shu4 gu3[1A] duan4 ren2 xing2,
邊秋一雁聲.---Bian qiu yi yan4 sheng.
露從今日起,---Lu4 cong2 jin ri4 qi3.
月是故鄉明.---Yue4 shi4 gu4 xiang ming2.

有弟皆分散,---You3 di4[2B] jie fen san3,
無家問死生.---Wu2 jia wen4 si3 sheng.
寄信常不達,---Ji4 xin4 chang2 bu4 da2,
況乃未休兵.---Kuang4 nai3 wei4 xiu bing.

The explanations in plain Chinese and English

(1) 戰地正響著一片鼓聲, 到處戒備森嚴, 阻斷了行人的去路,
War drums are sounded in the battle fields and everywhere is heavily guarded
stopping people from traveling.
(2) 這時, 邊境已臨秋天, 只聽到一陣鴻雁的啼聲.
It is autumn and at the border one can only heard the crying of wild geese.
(3) 啊! 從今夜開始, 露水越發晶瑩潔白了,
Well, from tonight on there will be more and more dew.
(4) 在異鄉, 總覺得月兒還是故鄉的最為明亮.
Living in a foreign land it is always perceived that the moon at home is
brighter.

(5) 我有兩個弟弟, 如今都已分散各處,
I have two younger brothers, but now we are all being separated,
(6) 家園也因戰亂而殘破了, 根本無從深問家人及親友的生死存亡.
Our home has been destroyed by the war and I have no news about whether
our relatives are still alive or dead.
(7) 我與弟弟離開這麼遠, 平常寄信都很難到達,
My brothers and I are living so far apart that our correspondences seldom
reach each other.
(8) 何況現在戰爭還沒有停止, 那就更難互通信息了.
Besides the war is still on and it is more difficult to know about each
other.

Notes:

(1A) 戍鼓 (shu4 gu3)
The sound of the drums in battlefield (戰地的鼓聲).

(2B) 有弟 (you3 di4)
Du Fu Had two younger brothers. At that time one of them was in Henan province
and the other in Shandong province and he himself was in Gansu province
(杜甫有兩個弟弟, 這時一在河南, 一在山東, 他自己則在甘肅).

(3C) 未休兵 (wei4 xiu bing)
Wars had not ended when Du Fu wrote this poem. In the ninth month of 759AD,
Shi Siming captured present day Kaifeng city, and the provinces of Henan
and Shandong [戰爭尚未停息, 肅宗乾元二年 (759AD) 九月, 史思明陷東京 (開封
) 及齊 (山東), 汝 (河南), 鄭 (洛陽), 滑 (滑縣 in 河南)].
