李白之詩 A poem by Li Bai (701AD to 762AD)

登金陵鳳凰臺
Ascending the Phoenix Tower in Jinling [*1A]

鳳凰臺上鳳凰遊,---Fenghuang Tai shang4 feng4 huang2 you2,
鳳去臺空江自流.---Feng4 qu4 tai2 kong jiang zi4 liu2.
吳宮花草埋幽徑,---Wu Gong [*2B] hua cao3 mai2 you jing4,
晉代衣冠成古邱.---Jin Dai4 yi guan cheng2 gu3 qiu [*3C].

三山半落青天外,---San Shan [*4D] ban4 luo4 qing tian wai4,
二水中分白鷺洲.---Er4 shui3 [*5E] zhong fen Bailuzhou [*6F].
總為浮雲能蔽日,---Zong3 wei2 fu yun2 neng2 bi4 ri4,
長安不見使人愁.---Changan bu4 jian4 shi3 ren2 chou2.

The explanations in plain Chinese and English.

(1) 這座鳳凰臺上, 從前有鳳凰遊過的.
Formerly, there were phoenixes visiting this Phoenix Tower,
(2) 自從鳳凰飛去之後, 便空存著這座臺, 祇有臺前的江水, 還不斷的流著.
Since the phoenixes flew off it had become an empty tower with only the
water in the river flowing ceaselessly in front of the tower.
(3) 到現在見吳宮中的花草, 都埋沒在荒僻的小路裏,
Up to now the grass of the Wu palace has been buried in the small out-of-the
way path,
(4) 東晉時代一班貴顯的官吏, 都在荒墳裏面埋葬著.
The nobles and officials of the Eastern Jin era were buried in the desolate
graves.

(5) 前面的一座三山, 有一半接連到青天的外面,
Half of the three mountains in the front that connected to the blue sky
can be seen,
(6) 秦淮河分出來的兩條水路, 當中有一個白鷺洲分開著.
The land, that is dividing the Qin Huai River into two waters, is the Bailuzhou.

(7) 天上的浮雲, 總是把太陽光遮蔽著,
The floating clouds have always shaded off the sunlight,
(8) 使我望不見長安地方, 不免使我愁悶啊.
Making me unable to see the land where Changan is situated that causes me
sad.

Notes:
[*1A] 鳳凰臺 Fenghuang Tai
is in the south Jiangning county (江寧縣) in Jiangsu province (江蘇省)

[*2B] 吳宮 Wu Gong
Wu gong was built by Sun Quan (孫權 182AD to 252AD) the Emperor of the Kingdom
of Wu (吳國) during the period of the Three Kingdoms (三國時代 220AD to
265AD)

[*3C] 古邱 gu qiu
Means desolate graves

[*4D] 三山 San Shan
San Shan is in the southwest of Jiangling (that is present day Nanjing 南
京) where there are three mountain peaks standing in a row linked together
from north to south. Therefore the three peaks are called San Shan (三山
Three Hills).

[5E] 二水 Er Shui
秦淮河 (The Rver of Qin Huai)
Qin huai River is in the present day city of Nanjing (南京市) in Jiangsu
province (江蘇省). Ying Zheng (嬴政), the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty
(秦始皇帝 221BC to 210BC), ordered the construction of a river cutting through
the mountain of Zhongshan (鐘山). Some of the water from the Huai River
was redirected through this newly dug river to the present day Nanjing city.
Then the river was divided into two. The water of one flows through the
city and the other flows through the outskirts. Thus people call it 二水
Two Waters.

[6F] 白鷺州 Bailuzhou (please refer to (6) as above.
It is in the south west of the city as an island in the Yangtze River.
