李白之詩 A poem by Li Bai (701AD to 762AD)

下江陵 (*1A)
Sailing down the Yangtze River to Jiangling

朝辭白帝彩雲間,---Zhao ci2 Baidi (*2B) cai3 yun2 jian,
千里江陵一日還,---Qian li3 Jiangling yi ri4 hai4,

兩安猿聲啼不住,---Liang3 an4 yuan2 sheng ti2 bu4 zhu4,
輕舟以過萬重山.---Qing zhou (*3C) yi3 guo4 wan4 chong shan.

(1) 早晨, 我辭別了彷佛在彩雲中間的白帝城,
In the morning, I said goodbye to the city of Baidi.
(2) 遠在千里外的江陵地方, 只消一天工夫, 便可以趕到.
It took me only one day to reach Jiangling which was a long way from the
city of
Baidi.

(3) 我在旅途中, 聽得兩岸猿猴不住的啼叫,
During the journal I constantly heard the apes and monkeys crying from the
river banks,
(4) 可是我坐著這輕快的船, 已經過了萬重的青山.
However, I took the fast light boat and in no time it had passed the countless
green mountains.

Notes:
(*1A) Jiangling (江陵)
was called Shannandao (山南道) during the Tang Dynasty. However, it is now
called the county of Jiangling in the present day Hubei province (湖北省
).

(*2B) Baidi (白帝)
The name of a town in the east of the present day county of Fengjie (奉節
縣以東) in Sichuan province (四川省). [Recently a dam has been built on
the 3-Gorge-Dam and the area is flooded. The place, where the Baidi Miao
is situated, has become an island.]

In 223AD, Liu Bei (劉備161AD to 223AD), the ruler of Kingdom of Han Shu
(漢蜀 221AD to 263AD), during the period of Three Kingdoms (三國時代 220AD
to 285AD), lost a battle to Sun Quan (孫權), the ruler of the Kingdom of
Wu (吳). Liu Bei retreated to the walled city of Baidi and soon after he
died there. People of later generations erected a temple to commemorate
Liu Bei. The temple was called Baidi Miao.

[唐朝詩人李白在一首詩中寫道﹕

"魚水三顧合﹐風雲四海生。
武侯立岷蜀﹐壯志吞咸京。"

劉備(161～223年)，字玄德，涿郡(今河北)人，東漢遠支皇族，三國時蜀漢的建立
者，公元221—223年在位。謂蜀漢昭烈帝。幼貧，后入軍旅參与鎮壓黃巾起義，在
諸葛亮的籌划中，聯合孫權打敗曹操于赤壁，占荊州、益州和漢中。221年稱帝，定
都成都，次年在吳蜀之戰中敗北。公元223年6月 10日，劉備病逝白帝城。

(*3C) Qing zhou (輕舟) means fast light boat.

[作法]
千里路一日而還﹐可見峽水舟行之速﹔
結句仍足第二句意﹐極言下流之易。
