 its the economy stupid!

remember that famous line from bill clinton? well clinton isnt much of a statesman but that line holds true and needs to be quoted and reminded to chinese people all the time.

i dont know how they actually came up with those numbers saying china's military spending will double by 2015 and that china's military budget will equal all of asia's military budget combined. it sounds fishy to me cause its like another one of those anti china rhetoric pieces mean't to influence the budget cuts in washington. they need to have a THREAT to justify their bloated defense budgets so they exaggerate china. i personally believe china won't increase it's military spending to that amount since its not neccessary because china's military doctrine is one of national defence of its territory, sea & airspace. they seem to be building a fleet capable of protecting its commerical shipping/oil routes and going out to the 2nd island chain. but even with these overseas deployments its still a very defensive doctrine. its a world of difference to the offensive nature of US or NATO where they fight, invade, occupy foreign countries.

but for the sake of discussion on this topic lets just ASSUME that WSJ/janes report is true. i've always believed that ECONOMIC POWER is the fundamental to national power. its the building block to the modern state. WITHOUT ECONOMIC POWER YOU HAVE NOTHING PERIOD. thats why i praise the kind of boring technocrat leaders we have in beijing because these are the men who have kept the ship running despite all the storms that come up to discourse the giant ship of china. these men are not brilliant statesmen that will be remembered in history they are mere general managers of china inc. and that is exactly what china needs. leaders that are well versed in economic and social development to bring this ancient nation once again to the top league. there is another thread in this forum about Xi jin ping's current visit to the US and we see how US politicians like to lecture Xi about their list of complaints about china. we then see Xi smile and responds in a mild modest manner to these yankee politicians. that kind of restraint/ patience and pragmatism is the hallmark you see in any top leader from beijing. the reason why Xi jin ping can smile so nicely in front of these american political buffoons is because during his tenure (10 years)of being leader of china, china's GDP will double of what it is today and will either surpass or come close to US GDP. so in the eyes of Xi jin ping this US trip is just a little political dance and folks like joseph biden or hillary clinton, barrack obama dont matter to him. his eyes are focused on the ball which is china's continued ecomomic development.

so when we put things into perspective its perfectly normal and affordable for china to have a increased defense budget that WSJ/janes claims. china's GDP is going to double of what it is today in approx 10 years so it's not going to break a sweat to have a defence budget that equals all of asia's defence budgets combined. afterall IT'S THE ECOMOMY STUPID!
