唐朝詩 Poems from Tang Dynasty (618AD to 907AD) (01)

王勃之詩 A poem by Wang Bo (650AD to 676AD)

杜少府 (*1A) 之任蜀州 (*2B)
Sending off Du Vice Prefect to his new post in Shu Zhou.

城闕輔三秦,---Cheng2 que4 fu3 San Qin (*3C),
風煙望五津.---Feng yan wang4 wu3 jin [*4D)].
與君難別意,---Yu4 jun nan2 bie2 yi4,
同是宦遊人.---Tong2 shi4 huan4 you2 (*5E) ren2.

海內存知已,---Hai3 nei4 cun2 zhi yi3,
天涯若比鄰.---Tian ya2 ruo4 bi3 lin2 (*6F).
無為在歧路,---Wu2 wei2 zai4 qi2 lu4 [*7G],
兒女共沾巾.---Er2 nu3 gong4 zhan jin (*8H).

The explanations in plain Chinese and English

(1) 堅固的城門, 這地方是輔佐三秦,
Strong solidly built fortifications will protect the Three Qins
(2) 在那風煙裏面 , 望得見四川的五津.
Even with the mist one can see the five ferry crossings.
(3) 我和你離別的意思,
The meaning of our departure is
(4) 一樣是個宦途游歷的人.
Like the road that the officials have to go through in their careers.

(5) 海內存在了這個知已,
Within the four seas I have this intimate friend,
(6) 就是在天邊也像近鄰一樣.
Even though we are far apart in the horizon yet we are like neighbours.

(7) 不要在分路的道上,
While we are on the road of departing,
(8) 不要學那兒女輩下淚沾巾的樣子啊!
We should not behaviour like boys or girls crying with the tears wetting
our handkerchiefs.

Notes:

(*1A) 杜少府
官名。縣尉的別稱。

(*2B) 蜀川
四川為古蜀地﹐因稱四川為蜀川。

(*3C) 三秦
楚霸王項羽滅秦後﹐分秦地為三﹐封為雍王塞王翟王﹐故三秦。
見史記 (by 司馬遷 Sima Qian 145BC to 86BC)。

(*4D) 五津
一曰白華津﹐二曰萬里津﹐三曰江首津﹐四曰沙頭津﹐五曰江南津。
見華陽國志。
