佳人 Jia Ren (Beautiful Woman)
絕代有佳人,---Jue2 dai4 you3 jia ren2,
幽居在空谷;---You ju zai4 kong gu3;
自云良家子,---Zi4 yun2 liang2 jia zi4,
零落依草木.---Ling2 luo4 (*1A) yi cao3 mu4.
關中昔喪亂,---Guanzhong (*2B) xi sang luan4,
兄弟遭殺戮;---Xiong di4 zao sha lu4;
官高何足論?--Guan gao he2 zu2 lun?
不得收骨肉.---Bu4 de2 shou gu3 rou4.
世情惡衰歇,---Shi4 qing2 e4 shuai xie,
萬事隨轉燭.---Wan4 shi4 sui3 zhuan3 zhu2 (*3C).
夫婿輕薄兒,---Fu2 xu4 qing bo2 er2,
新人美如玉.---Xin ren2 mei3 ru2 yu4.
合昏尚知時,---He2 hun (*4D) shang4 zhi shi2,
鴛鴦不獨宿;---Yuan yang (*5E) bu4 du2 su4;
但是新人笑,---Dan4 shi4 xin ren2 xiao4,
那聞舊人哭?--Na4 wen2 jiu4 ren2 ku?
在山泉水清,---Zai4 shan quan2 shui3 qing,
出山泉水濁.---Chu shan quan2 shui3 zhuo4
侍婢賣珠迴,---Shi4 bi4 mai4 zhu hui2,
牽蘿補茅屋.---Qian luo2 bu4 mao2 wu.
摘花不插髮,---Zhai hua bu4 cha fa,
采柏動盈掬.---Cai3 bo4 (*6F) dong4 ying2 ju.
天寒翠袖薄,---Tian han2 cui4 xiu4 bo4,
日暮倚修竹.---Ri4 mu4 yi3 xiu zhu2 (*7G).

(01) 有一位蓋世無雙的美女,
There was a loveliest woman in the world,
(02) 幽靜地住在荒涼的山谷裏;
She lived quietly and secluded in a bleak and desolate valley.
(03) 據她自己說, 她本是良家的女子,
According to what she said that she was a girl from a good family.
(04) 因為遭到種種磨折, 所以身世飄零, 不得和草木為伍, 度著淒涼的生活啊!
Owing to many unforeseen calamities her life had become miserable and sad.
(05) 關中的地方, 從前遭到兵禍,
During the turmoil and chaos of war in Guanzhong [A1],
(06) 兄弟都被殺死.
Her brothers and close relatives were killed.
(07) 說什麼高官厚祿,
They were high officials,
(08) 一旦遇著了戰亂, 連自己的骨肉也不能收拾, 多麼使人傷心啊!
It was very sad that, once the chaos caused by war started they could not
even protect their own fresh and bones.
(09) 世上的人情, 大都是輕視貧賤的,
The wisdom of human feelings in the world was but look down on the poor
and lowly.
(10) 萬事的變遷, 好像燭光被風兒吹轉一樣.
All things in this world change like the light of a candle being blown by
the wind.
(11) 她的丈夫是個輕薄的子弟,
Her husband was a man of frivolous,
(12) 另外娶了一個美好的女子便把他遺棄了!
And he married another beautiful wife and rejected her.
(13) 夜合草雖是一種草木, 尚且在夜間知時而合;
Morning glory was a flower (牽牛花) yet it knew how to close itself on time
in the late afternoon.
(14) 鴛鴦雖是禽類, 也雌雄相隨, 不肯獨宿;
The Mandarin-ducks are birds yet they refused to sleep alone, and the male
and female must lie side by side to sleep,
(15) 可是她丈夫的心目中,
But her husband could only see the smile of his new beautiful wife,
(16) 只看見新人歡笑, 那裏聽到舊人的哭泣呢?
And he could only hear the laughing of his new love and couldn't hear the
crying of his former wife.
(17) 唉! 泉水在山裏是澄清的,
Alas! The spring water was clear from its mountain source,
(18) 一旦流到山外, 便變為混濁了.
Once it flew away from the mountain it began to become turbid,
(19) 她為著生活的困難, 祇好叫婢女去賣了珍珠回來,
Wanting to live she had no alternative but to tell her maid to sell off
her pearls.
(20) 牽些蘿藤以修補的茅屋.
And to buy some straws to cover the leaking roof of her house.
(21) 現在的她, 摘了花來也無心插在髮上去妝飾,
In the current situation, she had lost her interest to live. Even though
she had picked a few flowers, she did not want to wear them on her hair,
(22) 但有時因為柏業具有堅貞的性質, 往往採得捀滿了兩手.
At times she picked up two palms handful of pine needle-shaped leaves which
presented the character of remaining faithful and unyielding.
(23) 在寒冬的天氣, 她穿著單薄的衣裳, 到太陽下山的時候,
During the cold winter, occasionally, she wore her thin silk clothes and
did not feel the cold.
(24) 把身子靠在長長的翠竹旁邊, 想她的心事哩!
When the sun had set she leaned herself on a tall green bamboo, thinking
about herself..

自函谷以西﹐總名關中 is in the present of Shaanxi province (陝西省).

燭火隨風而轉﹐用喻世態炎涼。
