白居易之詩 A Tang Poem by Bai Juyi (772AD to 846AD)

慈烏夜啼 (The crow cawing at night)

(01) 慈烏失其母,---Ci2 Wu [*1A] shi qi2 mu3,
(02) 啞啞吐哀音.---Ya3 ya3 tu3 ai yin.
(03) 晝夜不飛去,---Zhou4 ye4 bu4 fei qu4,
(04) 輕年守故林,---Qing nian2 shou3 gu4 lin2 [*2B],

(05) 夜夜夜半啼,---Ye4 ye4 ye4 ban4 ti2,
(06) 聞者為沾襟.---Wen2 zhe3 wei2 zhan jin.
(07) 聲中如告訴,---Sheng zhong ru2 gao4 su4,
(08) 未盡反哺心.---Wei4 jin4 fan3 bu3 [*3C] xin.

(09) 百鳥豈無母?--Bai3 niao3 qi3 wu2 mu3?
(10) 爾獨哀怨深!---Er3 du2 ai yuan4 shen!
(11) 應是母慈重,---Ying shi4 mu3 ci2 chong2,
(12) 使爾悲不任.---Shi3 er3 bei bu4 ren4 [*4D].

(13) 昔有吳起者,---Xi you3 Wu Qi [*5E] zhe3,
(14) 母歿喪不臨.---Mu3 mo4 sang bu4 lin2.
(15) 磋哉斯徒輩,---Cuo zai si tu2 bei4,
(16) 其心不如禽.---Qi2 xin bu4 ru2 qin2.

(17) 慈烏復慈烏,---Ci2 wu fu4 ci wu,
(18) 鳥中之曾參.---Niao3 zhong zhi Zeng Can [*6F].

The explanation in English

(01) The crow lost its mother,
(02) Ya ya it cried sadly.
(03) As it loved its mother dearly, for day and night it didn't fly away,
(04) But stayed put in the tree.

(05) It cawed at midnight every night,
(06) Those who heard its cawing felt sad for it,
(07) It sounded like telling that,
(08) It had not provided for its mother long enough.

(09) Every bird had a mother,
(10) Why are you so sad!
(11) You must love your mother dearly.
(12) That made you felt so sorrowful.

(13) In former times, there was a man named Wu Qi
(14) When his mother passed away he did not come home to attend her funeral,

(15) Sigh, what a son,
(16) His heart was worst than that of a bird

(17) Crows do likewise of crows.
(18) Among the birds the crow was the bird of Zeng Can (曾參).

[*1A] 慈烏 (ci2 wu)
means the crow.
Why the crow is called ci2 wu?
Because the crow knows fan bu mu niao (反哺母鳥)
or it knows how to feed it old mother.

[*2B] 故林 (gu4 lin2)
故 means 舊的意思
慈烏喪母﹐不忍離去﹐所以停留在原來的樹林中

[*3C] 反哺 (fan3 bu3)
反哺就是子女反過來餵飼年老的父母﹐引伸為奉養父母。

[*4D] 悲不任 (bei bu4 ren24)
悲不任就是悲傷得受不了

[*5E] 吳起 (Wu Qi ?? to 381BC)
戰國時候的名將﹐衛(國)人﹐善用兵﹐曾經被魏文侯﹐楚悼王重用﹐
著有兵書吳子六篇﹐主張明法度﹐廢不急之官﹐以養戰士﹐強兵力。
史書上說他母親逝世﹐都不回家奔喪﹐所以他的老師曾子鄙棄他於門外。

[*6F] 曾參 (Zeng Can 505BC to 436BC)
春秋魯國武城人﹐孔子的弟子﹐子思的老師。
以孝行聞名﹐曾經作孝經﹐一弘揚孝道。
後人尊稱他為[宗聖]。
