It is estimated that there are 22,500 Chiese and 90% of them are Hakkas, but only around 1000 can still speak Hakka language now.

Dear Sir,

I observed on my many visits to jamaica that there is a changing tide among who we all knew to be Hakka. The Chinese Benovolent Association on Hope Road has done much to keep alive the legacy of our ancestral roots. Even establishing a museum downstairs.

I was proud to see pictures of my great and grand parents on display.
We have as a people a very long and proud heritage. Unfortunately the subsequent generations have lost the language myself included. In fact the Mandarin (Pu tong hua) is more familiar to me than the few words of Hakka that I remember.

The trend now is a new group of chinese from the main land. In time I suspect China will invest so much in Jamaica that it would behoove us to teach the language in our high schools. After all French and Spanish is taught in our schools . The Language of the colonial masters.
The country needs to shift away from that old abrasive Pak gui agenda and embrace that which is more realistic to our people.

Hi ,

I live in Seattle, but intend to return to British Columbia.

I am Chinese Jamaican. A 57 yr old female.

My father is a past president of the Chinese Benevolent Association.
His name was Rupert B. Chinsee. He died in 1983 and is buried in Martha Brae, Falmouth.

The CBA that I remember was located on Barry Street, across from the premises of Mr. Lee Tom Yin, who published the island's Chinese newspaper, and was a good friend of my father.

I am pleased to see that the question is asked. It simply means that someone like myself will respond in time. I came to this webpage as a result of running a search on Yahoo on "Chinese Jamaicans". I concur with you that Chinese-Jamaicans worldwide are one ---- One Family. I am confident that more people will take the initiative and use your forum.
My parents migrated to Jamaica in the 1940's from southern China's Kwangtung Province. Interested friends are welcome to write me at loveindeed4u@yahoo.com

Kindest Regards and Best Wishes,

Karl, do you mean you know Patrick Li, son of Li Tom Yin?

I do not think you would be of the generation to know Li Tom Yin's father.

Also, at the time that my father served as President of the Chinese Benevolent Association on Barry Street, I remember going there as a young girl, perhaps about 10 years old, (about 1957 or so ) not sure, and the father of the popular Jamaican Chinese band leader, BYRON LEE ( Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires, I think), was a secretary at the CBA.

I think, but am not sure, that the name of Byron Lee's father was, Lee Meau Bin.

Trini,

Byron Lee definitely had/has rhythm.

He brings/brought much joy to people.

Wherever he played, one was sure to dance till the band closed.

I was wondering if anyone here has read the article by Christine Ho, "'Hold the Chow Mein, Gimme Soca': Creolization of the Chinese in Guyana, Trinidad and Jamaica" (in Amerasia Journal (1998), vol. 15, nr. 2, pp. 3-25). I can't get hold of it in the Netherlands, does anyone have a paper or perhaps even an electronic copy?
