 Re: Chinese-Jamaican people

Dear Sir,

I observed on my many visits to jamaica that there is a changing tide among who we all knew to be Hakka. The Chinese Benovolent Association on Hope Road has done much to keep alive the legacy of our ancestral roots. Even establishing a museum downstairs.

I was proud to see pictures of my great and grand parents on display.
We have as a people a very long and proud heritage. Unfortunately the subsequent generations have lost the language myself included. In fact the Mandarin (Pu tong hua) is more familiar to me than the few words of Hakka that I remember.

The trend now is a new group of chinese from the main land. In time I suspect China will invest so much in Jamaica that it would behoove us to teach the language in our high schools. After all French and Spanish is taught in our schools . The Language of the colonial masters.
The country needs to shift away from that old abrasive Pak gui agenda and embrace that which is more realistic to our people.
