 Any Hakkas from Huiyang, Huizhou?
Author: ChinZheWang Descendant
Date:   11-21-03 10:31

To all my Hakka Brothers & Sisters,
My grandfather used to live in Huiyang town in Huizhou county of Guandong Pronvince. My family bloodline is still pretty much 100% hakkas, eventhough we migrated to several places (Malaysia, then US). When I was in Shenzhen in 1996, I wanted to make a trip to Huizhou, but never had enough time to do so. Has anyone been to Huizhou? I've heard ovethere has large population of Hakkas? Anyone here from Huizhou? Hiong Dee Zhee Moi Bau Zhong.

CZW,
I got friend from Huizhou. Huizhou is almost a pure Hakka county. There is famous town: Danshui(W). There is also a famous lake in the centre of Huizhoushi: Xihu(West lake), same name as the one in Hangzhou, but the size is much smaller.

Have you ever tried the famous Hakka food "~؝J"? Then you must realize Huizhou is the production base of Hakka ~.

Huizhou also once generated a few famous generals in modern China like yehting"t", Deng??(i just forgot, who is follower of Dr. Sun Yatsen) etc.

Dear Mr Chin,

I am from Huiyang, Huizhou. If you mean you are from Huiyang, You usually stem from around Huizhou, not Huizhou City. My ancestral village is only 2 km east of Danshui. In Danshui, everyone speaks Hakka, although most young people can also speak Cantonese now.

Huizhou city is about 50km North of Danshui and everyone speaks Bendihua, or Hiizhou dialect there. The dialect can be understood by us with difficulty, but it is not Hakka. The speakers also think that they are not Hakka, but most other Hakka scholars like to include them into Hakka. I wrote a paper about the iodentity of the Huizhou dialect. If you are from Huizhou in Malaysia, I am 99% sure that you are not from Huizhou City.

I was active here about three years ago, but I moved to live in China now. I am now teaching in the Xiamen University at the Chinese department. (Look at my Homepage there). If you have more questions you can write to me. I also welcome people to study the Hakka language and linguistics at my Univeristy, but deadline for overysea students is the end of this month.

CK,

Sorry for the late reply. I've heard of DanShui (Tam Sui in Hakka) which means Tasteless Water. DanShui is very near to my grandfather's hometown (Huiyang or Fui Yong in Hakka). I've just made a post recently asking for help on information about Hakkas with Xue/Set family name in Huiyang/FuiYong.

Where are you currently residing? Talk to you later.

Professor Zinfat,

Nice to meet you. My actual name is Yang/Yeung. My family name is Xue/Set. My grandfather, Set Sea Min, came from Huiyang/FuiYong and later he settled in Bentung, Malaysia in the early 1900's. My father decided to leave Malaysia and move to USA for better future for our generation. As for any Hakka, we have a strong sense of ancestral worshipping. I'm curious how far I can trace back to my root in Huiyang. I feel like I'm missing part of myself without standing on the soil where my forefathers rested on. Sorry for the confusion on HuiZhou/FuiJiuw being located in Malaysia. In Malaysia, there are large presence of Hakka population in Ipoh, Kuching City in Sabah, and some remote area of Malaysia.

It's pretty interesting on HiiZhou people in HuiZhou/FuiJiuw. Probably we all share the same ancestor somewhere along the bloodline. Could you please email me more about your homepage link to set3422@yahoo.com? Thanks.

Lina,

Nice to meet you. So you're from Huizhou, China right? Pak Wong Fah means White Yellow Flower right? I don't think that's where my grandfather came from. I'm pretty sure he was born in HuiYong near Tam Sui. So you're saying in Malaysia there's also another city called Huizhou. How can I be so naive without knowing there's another Huizhou city in Malaysia. I lived there for 12 years. Thanks for your help.

Hey,

I am from DanShui. There are a lot of outside workers in the town. Although Hakkas are the native people there, when shopping on the streets, you have to first converse in Mandarin now, I was told. Like you, I live in USA now.

Hi,
Ive read names such as Dansui, Pak Wong Fa but not the ones Im familiar with. I heard my parents mention Lung-gong and Lam Hang Wui (Village). Is Huiyang a region with all these villages or towns in it?

Dear All,

Look at the map of Guangdong province.

http://chungyn.webhop.net/GuangdongPro.jpg

Search for Hong Kong marked H K in red.
A red line with an arrow at 11 o'clock is pointing to Guangzhou the provincial capital. Another red line with an arrow at 1 o'clock is pointing to Huiyang county.

Please let me know if you can't find any of them because the map is in Chinese.

Dear Norma,

Try this one

http://chungyn.webhop.net/GuangdongPro.jpg

I have so much information to be scanned and show you people,
but unfortunaly I have only 15MB which only allows me to store about 30 scannings. Any scanning that you cannot open must have been deleted automatically by the computer. In this case then you have to let me know so that I can either restore it or rescan it. That is the only way. So if you come across any scanning that you consider is important to you you either have to download it or print it.

Look at the map of Guangdong province and search for the red dot.
That is the county of Hui Yang near Hui Zhou, northeast of Hong Kong.

I am interested to find my roots. From the little information I have it would seem that my father came from "Tham Sui Hakka Village" in Fui Chiu. From the little research I have made it should be Danshui, Huizhou?. My surname would be Hui in Cantonese, same as comedian Hui brothers).

Any help would be most appreciated.
