I shall be pleased if someone could be able to help and tell the meaning of this subject. Perhaps it is a vulgar subject and if it is you can always write to my email to avoid embarassment. I thank you and look forward to it.

Yue Fei,

This is not a Hakka expression but a common Southern Chinese village 'scolding' term, as in a 'useless person'.

The closest in the Chinese Classics is of the Monkey King 'Shi Mm Hoong' in the fable of The Journey to the West. He was born from a stone.

Thanks for the explanation. However, I am not impressed. The Monkey King is a known to be mischevious but he is not a useless person. I have heard this "Born from stone" being said by Hakkas but I could not understand the true meaning of it. Someone out there may have other versions to it. Can it be a heartless person or a person who was not raised up by his own mother? I have seen a rerun cantonese series TV show by Patrick Tze Yin and the statement " Born from a stone " was mentioned. Its meaning I got was not a useless person but a person who was abandoned by his mother. Can the Cantonese version on this subject matter be the same with the Hakka , that is: A Bastard.
I hope what I have written is not offensive to this Hakka forum and if it is, my sincere apology. I hope someone with knowledge on this can either confirm or provide alternative answers to this.

Thanks.

In this forum website, I am sure there are Chinese Hakka scholars who are able to assist in this matter, particularly Mr Chung Yoon Ngan from the numerous articles he had posted here. I would appreciate it if Mr Chung could provide us the answer to this subject.

Thank you.

Cheok Hong Chuan is right. A person born from a stone is a restless, disobedient one, usually referring to a kid. The origin is "Journey to the West", a Ming dynasty novel about the acquisition of scripture from India by Monk Xuan Zang, assisted by Money King "Sun Wu Kong" and two other characters.

For your information, Mr SL Lee is our resident Chinese Scholar on Asiawind. What he does not know in relation to the Chinese Classics is not worth knowing!

I didn't think that the meaning was useless person. My mum uses it to scold my brother often when he disrepects her. Sort of like saying that he has forgotten who gave birth to him. Meaning that he thinks he came into this World all by himself and raised himself. Not appreciating his parents and especially his mother for giving birth to him and raising him. Sut goo bao tsute lo!
