I came across this recent document that posits a geographical origin of the Hakka language based on linguistic studies:

The study implies that Hakka is closest to an ancestral an ancient proto Chinese-Tai language (3000 BC). This proto-Chinese was different than the ancient language of northern China. The focus of origin and divergence is south China south of the Yangzi. Mandarin is derived from this southern proto-Chinese and not the original language of north China.
