Dear Keith,

Thank you for writing to me and taking an interest in Chinese surnames.
This is the Chinese surname of HUI.

Chinese Surname HUI (惠)

Hui means: give in charity; be kind to; kindness.
Surname Hui is about 2,600 years old.

The surname Hui originated in an area referred to during the Han Dynasty
(漢朝 206BC to 220AD) as Fufeng prefecture (扶風郡). The present day location
of Fufeng prefecture is in Xianyang county (咸陽縣, 108.7 degree East and
34.3 degree North on the world map ) of Shaanxi province (陜西省).

In 676BC, Ji Lang (姬閬) was crowned Zhou King Hui (周惠王), the seventeenth
King of the Zhou Dynasty (1134BC to 256BC). In 675BC, Ji Tui (姬頹) a son
of Zhou King Hui tried to dethrone him. Luckily Zhou King Hui was not captured
by his rebellious son and he fled to the State of Zheng (鄭國 present day
Xinzheng 新鄭 city in Henan province 河南省). The rebellion was crushed
the following year. Zhou King Hui returned to the capital, Cheng Zhou (成
周 present day Luoyang 洛陽 city in Henan province).

Zhou King Hui died in 652BC and was succeeded by his son Ji Zheng (姬鄭)
who was crowned Zhou King Xiang (周襄王). A few of Ji Zheng children gave
themselves HUI (惠) as their surname in honour of their grandfather.

The couplet of surname Hui:

源自周朝,---Yuan2 zi4 Zhou Chao,
望出扶風.---Wang chu Fufeng.

The original source of surname HUI was from the Zhou Dynasty,
It began to proliferate from the Prefecture of Fufeng.

A Chinese proverb

木有本, 水有源---Mu4 you3 ben3, shui3 you3 yuan2
Every tree has its roots and every river has its source.

In 2000, I published a book titled
"The Origin of Chinese Surnames 華人姓氏的來源"

More than likely, you are asking about Hui the Cantonese rendition of 许
There is no such thing as a Hakka surname, only the Hakka rendition (pronounciation) of the Chinese character. In Hakka rendition, it is spelt Hi, Hee or Hii.
