Ah Chong was waiting for a windfall
Long time ago somewhere in the Malay Peninsula there lived a farmer called
Ah Chong. He was a honest man but not very intelligent. Although Ah Chong
was not smart yet he was industrious as a farmer. He usually toiled his
farm all day long and was contented with life as a farmer.
One day while he was toiling the field suddenly he saw a rabbit running
across the field. It crashed against the exposed roots of a tree in the
middle of his farm. It broke its neck and died. He threw down his tools.
He went to the spot and picked it. That evening he had the rabbit for dinner.
That evening he thought that life would be much easier if he were just
sitting there near his field and waiting for a rabbit to run and crash against
the tree.
Next day he did not toil the field. He was sitting there waiting for a rabbit
to appear. Day after day he waited and waited. No rabbit appeared. In the
process he neglected his farm.
In no time the planting season was over. Ah Chong was still waiting for
a rabbit to appear. He did not attend to his field. Ah Chong did not know
that the rabbit that crashed into the exposed roots of the tree was just
a coincidence. It was probably one in a million chances. His future was
going to be bleak if he continued to neglect his field.
The moral of this story is that, in this world, there are many people who
want to become rich by easy means.
