Kiayingchou [嘉應州 Jiayingzhou], the stronghold of the Hakkas, is the
famous abode of scholars. It furnished a large number of licentiates and
yamen [government] officials for the past dynasties*. Even the poorest
want their children for education. To-day [1927] Meishien [梅縣 Meixian]
is dotted with over six hundred schools and claims the highest percentage
of literacy in the province [of Guangdong 廣東省]. The Hakkas are proud
of the literary accomplishment of their ancestors; they claim many well-known literati.
*Five out of the eleven successful candidates for the imperial chin-shih [進士
Jin Shi] degree in 1752 came from Kiayingchou.
