PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT


Ms. WANG Changyuan

GUZHENG: It has been known since the days of the Warring States period (475-221 B.C.).
Its soundboard is made with wutong wood (firmiana platanifolia), red sandal wood for its sides and bottom. Since the 1950s the plucked instrument has
21 steel strings and is tuned to pentatonic scale which can be easily tuned
to the Western scale by moving each individual frets.


Featured artists: Ms. WANG Changyuan is considered one of the best guzheng
performers in the world.


Ms. MA Li
 

GUZHENG:
Ms. MA Li represents the upcoming young generation’s new Interpretation of guzheng music.

 



Ms. QIN Xueling
 

BEIJING OPERA: The best known form among various types of Chinese operas. The
performers are trained in singing as well as in dancing.

Featured artist: Ms. QIN Xueling is the 1994 recipient of the Plum Blossom
Award, the highest award for the Beijing opera.


 
20TH CENTURY COMPOSITION: Music for soprano and 7 instruments, including pipa and guzheng. Lyric is by one of the most gifted female poet LI Qingzhao of Song
Dynasty.

Featured composer: Mr. GAO Weijie is one of the leading composer of China.


Karen HAN

ERHU: Also known as Huqing, or Nanhu, known since Tang Dynasty (628-907), the two-stringed instrument is tuned to fifth and bowed between the two strings.
The sound box is covered with python skin. 

Featured artist: Karen HAN holds a master’s degree with honors in Performance
Arts from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. She is an internationally renowned erhu virtuoso, composer, and vocalist. She has performed for visiting foreign dignitaries at Beijing as well as at the White House, and as erhu soloist with
symphony orchestras. Currently Karen has 13 CDs in circulation. She is considered for Grammy Award for the “Best Instrumental Solo Performance with Orchestra.”



BAO Jian

GUANZI: It was called “bili” in the ancient time. Drawings of this instrument have been discovered in carvings dating back to 460 B.C. It is a cylindrical double reed related to the duduk, duduki, and bili of Eastern Europe, Persia, Armenia, and Georgia. Bili is usually made of rosewood and is associated with Buddhist and
Taoist music, while guanzi is of bamboo and associated with village music of the
southern China.

Featured artist: BAO Jian is the winner of the 1998 Pro Musics International
Award.


Frederick Chiu

PIANO: Featured artist: Frederick Chiu graduated with honors from the Indiana University and from the The Julliard School. He is the recipient of the 1996 Avery Fisher Career Grant for outstanding achievement and excellence in music. Of his performance critics have reviewed as “a pianistic genius”, “Chiu has reinvented a form of virtuosity…a phenomenon that must be heard.” Frederick Chiu records exclusively for harmonia mundi usa. His release of three rarely played Sonatas of Mendelssohn was chosen as “Record of the Year” by Stereo Review, and considered “among the most soul-satisfying releases of the past few years” by the Wall Street Journal. Most recently, in a review of the Chopin 12 Etudes and Rondos, Classic CD described Chiu as “a lyricist at heart.”
