Hard press till March futures settlement: Index closed 12,427.34 (-55.9)


 

US Market (3/26/2004): 

DJI : 10212.97 (-5.85)

On Friday, the DJI struggled to keep above water, finally 
closing just less than 6 points down. Volatility also is felt by 
Naz, ending 7.15 points lower. The rally on Thursday just lack 
the steam to move forward. For the week, the Dow climbed 26.37, 
or 0.3 percent and the Nasdaq rose 19.55, or 1.0 percent, while 
the S&P 500 lost 1.71, or 0.2 percent. 

 
 ETrade was added to S&P500, up 0.40 to 13.10. Ameritrade 
also added 0.51 to close at 14.86. 



The election in Taiwan has resulted in a historical
demonstration on Mrach 27 of 500,000 in front of the
presidential office, requesting a recount, explanation of the
shooting incident and possibly a re-vote. There are simply too 
many discrepancies for the shooting that affected the resuolt of 
the election, by which Chen only won less than 30,000 votes. The 
practice of western democracy in Taiwan is under serious 
challenge.

 


The HS London Reference Index finished at 12,534 (+50).



This morning the March Futures opened at 12,450 (+20), bringing 
the cash market to open at 12,493 (+10) fifteen minutes later.  
Nevertheless the strong hands kept on hard stamping on the 
heavyweights, pressing the market down to the 12,400 edge at 
around 11 am. The market rebounded slightly with the morning 
session finished at 12,465 (-18).  Half day turnover was 8.1 bil 
HK$. 

In the afternoon the market was again stamped to the 12,400 edge 
with HSI finished low at 12,427 (-55).  Total turnover of the day 
is 12.7 bil HK$.  Nevertheless as the cash market finished, the  
futures were pushed up. The transaction counts in March/April HSI 
futures were 35,052/30,719 respectively.
