Turkmenistan has the world's fourth-largest proven reserves of natural gas.

Country With World’s Fourth Largest Proven Gas Reserves Now Only Has One Customer | Frontera (April 1, 2017)
"Few people may realize that when it comes to natural gas, Turkmenistan is a giant. According to BP Statistical Review of World Energy, Turkmenistan has the world’s fourth largest proven natural gas reserves, even higher than the US. Its share stands at 9.4% of the total proven gas reserves and is behind only Iran, Russia, and Qatar.
...
Then in 2016, Russia completely stopped purchasing gas from [Turkmenistan].
...
On January 1, 2017, Turkmengas suspended its shipments to Iran on non-payment of dues."

Strangely enough, Turkmenistan has only one major buyer of its natural gas.

The Russians cannot buy Turkmenistan gas for re-export to Europe, because of European sanctions against Russia.
The Iranians have been under sanctions by the United States and can't seem to find the hard currency to pay for Turkmenistan gas.

This leaves China. China is very professional in paying on-time and is a reliable buyer of Turkmenistan gas.

Regarding Turkmenistan's only major customer, the Turkmen president is eager to expand trade relations with China (see AzerNews citation below).

There is good news for Turkmenistan. China started construction of Tajikistan's portion of Line D, which is the fourth natural gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to China.

Line D via Tajikistan to China positive for Turkmenistan: expert | Trend News Agency (August 2, 2017)
"China’s CNPC started construction of Tajik section or Line D of the Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan-China gas pipeline on July 26."

"China has been Turkmenistan’s biggest trade partner over the past five years.

As of 2016, about 40 enterprises operated in Turkmenistan with the participation of Chinese capital and nearly 70 investment projects worth more than $4 billion and 2.3 billion Chinese yuans were registered."
