China is the new leader on Nature Publishing Index (Asia)

Postby Martin Su » Tue Nov 18, 2014 6:00 pm

Nature is one of the most prestigious science journals in the world. For the first time, China has published more papers in Nature than Japan. The key metric is the "corrected count" (or CC). The CC makes the proper adjustment to divide credit on joint research collaboration among countries.

Year-to-date, China is responsible for 343.27 articles that Nature accepted for publication. Japan trails at a distant 291.34. The year is practically over and there is no time for Japan to make up the difference. Next year, China will officially pass Japan in the number of science papers published in Nature when all of the data has been collected for year 2014.

This is a momentous shift as China claims the crown of the top rank on the Nature Publishing Index (NPI) for the Asia-Pacific region.

that is quite impressive, hope that the quality of research papers
are getting better and better.

also, china could learn a thing or two from brazil.
years ago, brazil was rather behind in science and tech, and it went ballistic
by spending lots of money on r&d and concentrated on A Few specific fields
such as recoverable energies (eg. from the ocean floor: oil etc), animal/agricultural science etc.

brazil also sends out tens of thousands or even hundreds thous of students
overseas and tehy return back to help brazil grow.
china also sends out students overseas and many are returning back..but
if the country's air is not healthy..no way are they going to return with happy enthusiasm.

china is quite good in biomedical sciences and renewable energies, as well as software.

china should accelerate these 3-5 programs:
- biomedical sciences
- innovation in software
-increase r&d in renewable energies
- ep sciences
-financial services/innovation

China's 2015 Nature Index soared by 10%

The most important trend is China's year-over-year increase of 10% in the Nature Index (from 6,037 to 6,728 in weighted fractional index articles). The other Top 7 countries in the Nature Index were mostly flat in their annual quality research output.
